Will Office Scripts Replace VBA?
VBA will soon have a challenger — it’s called Office Scripts.
Microsoft first announced Office Scripts back in 2019. Since then, it’s been available in Excel for the web to those with a commercial or educational license. However, it’s set to roll its way into the desktop version from next month.
Like VBA, Office Scripts allows you to automate repetitive tasks either by using the Action Recorder (the equivalent of the Macro Recorder) or manually writing code. It uses TypeScript, which is a superset of JavaScript.
The big advantage is compatibility. You can write scripts that will work online and on desktop, whereas VBA is limited to the latter.
Following up on my opening line, it’s important to stress that Office Scripts is comfortably behind VBA in terms of capabilities — and will be for a while. But it is an evolving language so will be exciting to see its progression.
