STOP text from overflowing and wrapping in Excel
In a recent viral TikTok video, creator @frogtownmayor went on a lengthy rant about Excel’s default text overflow — where a cell’s contents spill into the empty cells beside it.
While it might sound like a trivial complaint, it’s bugged me on numerous occasions, too.
She was arguing that text wrap should be the default instead. However, this annoyingly changes the height of rows automatically to accommodate text.
Like with so many things in Excel, sometimes you want this, sometimes you want that, and sometimes you want something else.
What if you don’t want overflow, wrap, and any automatic row adjustments from taking place?
The solution is:
- Select the cell you want to format.
- Press Ctrl + 1 to open the Format Cells window.
- On the Alignment tab, change the Horizontal dropdown to Fill.
- Select OK.
Your text will now stay neatly inside the cell, irrespective of any changes, including when you toggle Wrap Text on and off.
