Find out the exact angle of your MacBook lid

Walk into an Apple Store and you’ll notice something subtle about the MacBooks on display. They’re all positioned at exactly 76°.
At first glance, it seems like an oddly specific number, but the answer is surprisingly clever.
Rather than presenting each MacBook in the perfect viewing position, Apple intentionally sets the display at an angle that encourages customers to interact with it. Almost everyone instinctively adjusts the screen to suit their own preference, and in doing so, they’re already physically engaging with the product.
It’s a small detail, but one that reflects Apple’s obsession with the customer experience. In fact, up until 2015, Apple’s preferred angle was 70°!
Measuring the angle yourself
Learning about Apple’s 76° display angle got me wondering: what angle is my own MacBook usually open at?
The problem is that macOS doesn’t expose this information anywhere. Although supported MacBooks contain a lid angle sensor, there isn’t a built-in way to view its readings.
So I built a small macOS app called Lid Angle.

The app reads the lid angle sensor in supported MacBooks and displays the current angle in real time. As you open and close the display, the angle updates instantly, making it easy to see exactly how your MacBook is positioned.

A simple utility
Lid Angle isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s a lightweight utility built around a single idea: exposing a piece of information that your Mac already knows but never shows you.
Whether you’re curious about Apple’s famous 76° display angle, trying to recreate a comfortable setup, or simply enjoy exploring hidden hardware features, it’s a fun little tool to have.
Compatibility
Lid Angle works with supported MacBook models that expose Apple’s lid angle sensor, generally those released from 2019 onwards. If your MacBook supports the sensor, the app will display the lid angle in real time as you move the screen.
Sorry, Windows users. You’ll have to get your protractors out if you want to calibrate your laptop lids!
