Taste the Sheets
In recent years, it’s become customary for multi-billion dollar corporations and conglomerates to rainbow-wash their social media accounts in support of June’s Pride Month.
This trend initially started as a laudable show of solidarity towards marginalised groups, but many people have cottoned on to the fact it might just be a cheap PR exercise after all.
Certainly, for some companies, it’s a commercial opportunity to slap rainbows on T-shirts, cakes, and trains. All to tell the world how virtuous they are while profiting from ‘pink capitalism’.
However, the likes of BMW, Cisco, Bethesda, BP, and Visa came under scrutiny one year from eagle-eyed spotters who noticed some of their region-specific accounts were not afforded the same lick of paint others were.
Visa even had the temerity once to use the slogan, “Love uplifts everyone, everywhere.” in their Twitter banner, and have also used “Love, accepted everywhere.” elsewhere. Of course — with caveats attached to that last word.
It’s all a bit awkward, isn’t it?
In fact, according to World of Statistics, only six of the 40 (15%) most-valuable companies have changed their Twitter logos this year to LGBTQIA+ alternatives.
Those that have, have opted for the Progress Pride theme over the traditional all-rainbow, as it’s deemed ‘more inclusive’.
However, in my emoji palette, I can only see the old one. 🏳️🌈 Needs to be an update, doesn’t there? Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see what the next iteration is.
Anyway, if you want to inject an eclectic mix of Skittle juice into your Google Sheets, do the following:
Enter each letter of the word ‘PRIDE’ into a separate cell across the range A1:E1. The letters can be uppercase or lowercase.
Once finished, you’ll notice each column colour changes instantly. What’s interesting is it’s not only the cells that change, but the actual column letters too. Is this achievable using Apps Script?
It’s time for you to Taste the Sheets.*
