Adobe’s sneaky subscription trap
Like many others, I got caught out recently by Adobe‘s sneaky terms and conditions.
Firstly, there has been a sudden bump in price: £16.24 to £28.99 a month for my Creative Cloud subscription.
Secondly, when I attempted to cancel my plan, it was surprising to see a window pop up telling me I needed to pay £159.46, having already agreed to a £347.88 fee spread over 12 months.
Out of the 100+ subscriptions I’ve had over the past 15 years, I’ve never been asked to pay a cancellation fee when I’ve wanted to stop using something.
Of course, all of this is buried in the Ts & Cs somewhere (in teeny tiny text), and they take advantage of the fact that no one reads them.
Thankfully, a quick Google allowed me to find a loophole to avoid paying this charge, but not everyone will do that.
While I haven’t actually cancelled yet, I am contemplating doing so due to Adobe’s attitude towards its customers.
It’d be a shame to do that, as the likes of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat are better than any of the alternatives out there. I’m not a heavy user by any means, but it’s nice to have access to them.
In any case, I’m glad the US government is taking action.
